How I can retrofit my house is a common question. A good answer looks at the full range of energy-efficient options.
What is Retrofit?
Retrofit is the process of modifying an existing building to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint. It involves a Retrofit Assessment to gather specific information and determine cost-effective measures to improve energy efficiency.
This assessment includes collecting data on factors like insulation, heating systems, air tightness, ventilation, windows, doors, and renewable energy systems. Energy modeling is then performed to evaluate the current energy performance and generate an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). Different scenarios are subsequently modeled with recommendations for energy-saving measures.
What measures can be taken?
Various measures can be recommended to reduce energy consumption, such as wall insulation, loft insulation, floor insulation, Heat Pump installation, Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system, and Solar PV. However, the most common retrofit method is improving air tightness to eliminate draughts.
An airtight building, coupled with mechanical ventilation, ensures a constant flow of fresh air while retaining heat, resulting in a comfortable and healthy home.
Why Retrofit?
Newly built buildings in the UK must meet certain standards to minimize their carbon footprint. However, older buildings tend to be energy inefficient and expensive to heat. PAS2035 was introduced to enhance the energy efficiency of existing buildings.
PAS2035 requires an assessment by a Retrofit Assessor before retrofit work begins. This assessment provides information for a Retrofit Coordinator to plan the retrofit process.
How can I Retrofit my own home?
Some local councils offer schemes and grants for retrofitting, such as the Green Homes Grant Local Authority Directive, Renewable Heat Grant, and Social Housing De-Carbonization fund. However, funding options for private retrofit projects are limited.
If you’re interested in retrofitting your own home to reduce energy bills and carbon footprint, we offer a Home Energy Survey. This comprehensive service includes Retrofit Assessments, Airtightness testing, Ventilation testing, and Thermography to analyze your home’s energy consumption and identify improvement opportunities.
