What is a Home Energy Survey and what does it include?

A Home Energy Survey is a diagnostic assessment of your property’s energy performance, combining whichever of thermal imaging, air tightness testing, ventilation testing, cavity wall inspection and energy modelling are relevant to your home – giving you an evidenced picture of where heat and money are being lost, and a clear, actionable report on what to fix and in what order.

How does the Retrofit West voucher work, and am I eligible?

If you’re in Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset or South Gloucestershire, the Retrofit West voucher – funded by the West of England Combined Authority – covers 50-80% of the cost of our air tightness test, advanced air tightness test (with a whole-house ventilation survey) or thermographic survey. Do I need every part of the survey, or can I choose specific tests?

We always recommend pairing air tightness testing with a ventilation test and thermal imaging survey – together they give a genuinely rounded picture of where a home is losing heat and whether it’s ventilated safely enough to fix that without causing damp. Cavity wall inspection isn’t relevant to every property, so we’ll advise whether it applies to yours once we know the construction type. Energy modelling is optional on top of these – the testing itself gives you clear, actionable guidance, but modelling adds a more structured, detailed roadmap if you’re planning a fuller retrofit and want to see how different improvement options compare before committing.

Why would I need a ventilation check as well as an air tightness test?

Sealing up a leaky home without fixing inadequate ventilation first raises the risk of condensation and mould rather than lowering it. That’s exactly the sequencing issue our survey caught for David’s Bristol home – his ventilation system was found to be delivering barely a quarter of the required extract rate, meaning ventilation had to be addressed before any airtightness improvements were considered.
