The Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund’s second wave of funding has just been released. Here’s what that might mean for you.

Sustainability professionals across local councils can finally breathe a huge sigh of relief. The second wave of government funding for decarbonisation projects has been announced at last!

What is the the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund?

The Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF) is a large funding scheme focused on upgrading social housing stock in the UK. This investment will unquestionably play a crucial role in decarbonising homes across the nation. In essence, it will lead to reduced energy bills, warmer homes, and lower carbon emissions.

In its first wave, £61mn in funding was awarded to 16 local authorities for 18 projects. Wave 2 is even more ambitious, with £1.4bn granted to over 100 social housing authorities right across the UK.

The money will go towards improvements to vulnerable households and off-gas grid homes with an EPC rating of D or below. Ultimately, the aim is to save tenants between £220 and £400 a year on energy bills.

Who will benefit from the funding?

The primary beneficiaries of SHDF funding will be the householders that receive home improvements. In addition, an estimated 20,000 jobs in the construction sector will be created to deliver the work needed.

The Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF) will help thousands of UK households save money and cut carbon.

How can we help?

Large-scale domestic decarbonisation projects follow a framework called PAS 2035. This documentation specifically maps out a best practice approach to retrofit. A key part of this process is firstly an assessment stage. This is where experienced domestic energy assessors conduct home visits to collect measurements and vital data. The resulting report informs the final solution, helping the retrofit designer understand which low carbon solution should be used for each home.

We have an award-winning team of retrofit assessors here at Building Energy Experts busy delivering projects nationwide. We now need even more talented individuals to join our ranks. If you like the sound of this, or know someone talented, take a look at our latest job opportunities.
