Sahan Wathuthanthrige
Energy Assessor
My journey in the built environment began with Civil Engineering. After completing my BTech (Hons) in Civil Engineering, I worked as a Civil Engineer, where I gained practical experience and developed a strong understanding of buildings, construction methods and how different elements of a property come together.
As my career progressed, my interest increasingly moved towards sustainability and the performance of buildings. I became particularly interested in how we can use our understanding of construction to improve existing properties, reduce energy use and create more sustainable buildings for the future. This led me to complete an MSc in Sustainable Planning and Environmental Management at the University of Hertfordshire. I am also a Licentiate member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), as well as a qualified Domestic Energy Assessor and Retrofit Assessor.
I now enjoy combining my civil engineering and property knowledge with my experience in sustainability, energy assessment and retrofit. Alongside site-based work, I have a strong interest in digital design and 3D modelling, with experience using AutoCAD and Revit to produce technical drawings and detailed 3D models of residential properties.
Creativity and problem solving have always been a big part of my interest in engineering. Through self-learning and experimentation, I developed my knowledge of CNC technology and designed and built CNC machines from scratch, including using reused materials and components. This also gave me the opportunity to explore bespoke design and fabrication, including parametric feature walls and other custom designs, taking projects from digital modelling through to physical production.
I am motivated by the opportunity to keep learning and to bring together engineering, technology, design and sustainability in a practical way. I believe my experience across both construction and building performance gives me a wider perspective when looking at properties and their potential for improvement. I am excited to continue developing this at BEE and to contribute towards creating more efficient, sustainable and better-performing buildings.
